Thank you for your interest in becoming a Health and Safety UNISON Rep. The role of Health and Safety Rep is a hugely valuable asset to your workplace. UNISON depend on its’ Health and safety Reps to pick up on issues before they become dangerous.  The Oxfordshire County UNISON Branch aim to support and mentor our Health and Safety reps so that members work in safe workplaces which have staff wellbeing at their core. The role is a broad one and we like to encourage our reps to start offering whatever level of support to members that they feel comfortable with and we would encourage anybody interested to have a go.

Health and Safety – A Guide for UNISON safety reps

To formalise your position you will need to complete some forms first.  You can download the necessary forms here.

Once you have downloaded these forms you will need to put the ‘Election Notice Board Form” on your workplace notice board, somewhere that members can access it for a minimum of 2 weeks. If somebody wishes to stand against you will need to contact the branch on 01865 815990.  A UNISON officer will suggest a role share or appointment of one of the runners into an alternative role such as Learning Rep or Steward.  If members are not agreeable to this then a selection will be decided by a ballot of members in the workplace, a process which the branch will support.

Once this has been decided or if nobody else wishes to stand against you then you will need to complete the “Notification of Workplace Representative form” and “Election form” as above.

All forms then need to be returned to Anya Greig, UNISON Office, County Hall, 1 New Road, Oxford, OX1 1ND.

Once we have received the forms and have processed them, a letter acknowledging your role will be sent out which you can show to your employer/ line manager.

There is fantastic training available through Unison which you can find out more about by clicking on the ‘Education & Training’ button on this website.   Once we have received your forms we will write to you about training opportunities.. If you would like someone to visit your work place to discuss any aspect of being a Health and Safety rep please contact Anya Greig on 01865 815990.
